Kyrgyzstan celebrates 16 years of UN peacebuilding partnership on Peacebuilding Day

The events coincide with the first-ever globally observed United Nations Peacebuilding Week, commemorating twenty years of the Peacebuilding Commission and the Peacebuilding Fund. Kyrgyzstan has partnered with the Fund since 2010, with over USD 64 million invested in social cohesion, cross-border cooperation, youth and women's leadership, and climate resilience. In December 2025, Kyrgyzstan brought its experience of cross-border peacebuilding to the Peacebuilding Commission for the first time, in a meeting that highlighted the landmark border agreements with Tajikistan and Uzbekistan as a model for peaceful dispute resolution.

The anniversary also coincides with a significant diplomatic milestone: on 3 June, Kyrgyzstan was elected to the United Nations Security Council for the 2027-2028 term, having campaigned on conflict prevention, peaceful dispute resolution, and the Women, Peace and Security agenda. 

The exhibition was opened by Meder Abakirov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic, and UN Resident Coordinator Antje Grawe. Six stations presented the work of community peacebuilders, women's networks, youth representatives and climate practitioners from Uzgen, Aksy, Batken, Osh, Sumbula and the Ferghana Valley.

The Joint Steering Committee reviewed progress under the current funding cycle and discussed priorities for the period ahead.

Background: 

The first-ever United Nations Peacebuilding Week, 22-26 June 2026, marks the twentieth anniversary of the Peacebuilding Commission and the Peacebuilding Fund, both established by joint Security Council and General Assembly resolutions in 2005.

The Peacebuilding Fund is the United Nations' leading instrument for conflict prevention and sustaining peace. Timely, catalytic and risk-tolerant by design, it has supported 75 countries and territories, disbursed more than two billion USD, and worked with 24 UN partners and more than 80 civil society recipients. The Fund is primarily financed through voluntary contributions from Member States and, since 2025, 50 million USD per year in assessed funding approved by the General Assembly. The Kyrgyz Republic has been a partner of the Peacebuilding Fund since 2010. Over sixteen years, the Fund has allocated over 64 million USD across successive eligibility cycles, supporting social cohesion, inclusive governance, cross-border cooperation, youth and women's leadership, and climate resilience. The current cycle 2021-2026 accounts to approximately 20.7 million USD in completed, ongoing and newly approved investments.
